Just as its name suggests, the Fertile Crescent is a curve-shaped area that extends from the Nile River in northeastern Africa to the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in southwestern Asia. The soil in these river valleys was ideal for farming. The area is home to some of the world's earliest civilizations including Sumer and Ancient Egypt.
