Beginning in 1419, Prince Henry of Portugal—known as Prince Henry the Navigator—sent expeditions down the west coast of Africa to find new sources of trade with Africa and Asia. He established an important naval institute at Sagres, Portugal, that taught navigational techniques to explorers. With each voyage, seamen gained more knowledge of winds, currents, and the African coastline.
