The Manchu enforced cultural rules on their subjects. All men had to have the Manchu hairstyle, a shaved head with a single braided pigtail, called a queue in English. Manchus were not allowed to marry the Chinese. All Chinese officials had a Manchu supervisor. The Manchus were very influenced by Chinese education and culture. By the late 1700s they began to lose their distinctive culture.
