The United Nations began as the Allies during World War II. The charter members had all declared war on Germany and Japan by 1945. The Republic of China, the first country attacked by the Axis, signed the UN Charter first.
Most other countries in the world have joined the United Nations since 1945. Most joined shortly after their independence.
Dependencies are not represented at the United Nations. However, the United Nations has long supported the right of countries to govern themselves.
UN peacekeepers are soldiers and police that monitor peace agreements and protect victims of war. Member countries donate peacekeepers from their own military and police.
